Video - Ghost in the Shell, all things considered, doesn't have the worst history on Home Media in terms of video. The original Blu-Ray was a decent enough scan from the era minus the windowboxing. in 2018, the film received a 4K remaster that was quite controversial but in my honest opinion is still the best looking release of the film currently available. I used the 2023 KSM DEBD as it was the best 1080p SDR source. Now the big elephant in the room is of course "What about Judgment"? I want to say first that I do respect the Judgment team and their work on the HDTV master, it is rather impressive. That being said, the HDTV is an awful looking master even with the restored grain, the grain is extremely mushy and the detail retention is even worse than the most grain-managed parts of the UHD master. [Comparison Pics](https://slow.pics/c/qoKbTFru) Audio - Both languages and their mixes surprised me a fair amount. JP Stereo was sourced from the JP UHD as it was basically the same as the Laserdisc PCM and because the Lionsgate UHD Stereo was an Atmos downmix. Where things got interesting was the surround mixes, Ghost in the Shell was originally mixed in Dolby Stereo ([read more here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Stereo)) so the stereo master has surround information matrixed in. From my research, nearly every release with a surround JP track was an unfolded master used for the stereo mix. The surround rendering lack the directional effects of the matrixed stereo but I verified with my own decode that It's just the way the original mix was done. I personally went the DTS 6.1 version from the SE DVD as it had the most high frequency detail and highest bitrate, Sadly the ED was replaced with the dub ED but I patched it with the DEBD 6.1 track (lossless, but had a lot of high frequency cut-off). The center surround on both tracks was just the mono surround with a high-pass filter. I decided to present the track in a 5.1 container with a blank LFE and dual-mono surround. The Dolby Atmos mix from the US UHD also had the ED replacement but again since rest of the track is really good I have included it. ENG Stereo was sourced also from the JP UHD because frankly all copies of the original dub stereo mix suck ass (the Laserdisc analog track was a massive meme). To my suprise, all the surround mixes of the dub I checked were actual native 5.1 mixes and not Manga's usual upmixes, again went with the DTS 6.1 track for the same reason as the JP 5.0 and because the lossless 5.1 from the Anchor Bay release sounds like shit and is missing several SFXs. The Dolby Atmos remix is also included. Subtitles - Another big shortcoming of Judgment is their subtitle track is less than stellar, there is a lot of lines that are borrowed directly from the dub and worded weirdly. I suspect this translation is sourced from the JPBD or Anchor Bay USBD which have similar characteristics. I originally went with the older Manga US translation from the first DVD and US UHD but I later found the Manga UKBD subtitles which lined up way more with the Japanese script than the US translation did, it isn't perfect but it is by far the most accurate subtitles I've seen for the movie. I borrowed the opening typeset from Judgement (replacing the translation accordingly) and restyled the song typeset to match the OP credits. As an extra for those who want/are nostalgic I have included a folder of subtitles with the same typeset, just with the US script. To account for the ED change in the Atmos track, I have included an alternate subtitle track with the ED lyrics removed. If you prefer Judgement for whatever reason, everything here should sync to it (though I highly recommend sticking with the UHD video). I may make a 2160p HDR version in the future but MiLQ's release is a good 2160p alternative for those who want it (of course anyone who wants to do their own with my material is more than okay). If you feel so inclined, you can donate to my [Ko-Fi](https://ko-fi.com/izzyzilla2000). Peace! Thanks for the upload, this looks like a nice release. Speaking of 4K, it would be nice to see proper 1080p encodes of the 4:3 4K remasters of Robot Carnival as well as the Galaxy Express 999 movies.
this some moozzi2 lookin shit bruh watch the jp
That UHD looks disgusting lol. Thanks for the comps.
@DamianV8501 the UHD is not trash lol even in Judgement v3 there's some part of scenes looking so bad, just looking the comps does not tell the overall quality for me the UHD some kind of neutral state
